About

East Worthing consists of the residential area East of the town centre. It is bounded by the railway line and Broadwater to the north, Brooklands Park to the east and Worthing town centre to the west. The area comprised of approximately 9,000 residents as of the last census date. You will find Worthing Hospital located in this part of the town.

People and property

Like the early hamlet of Worthing, the area of modern East Worthing was initially part of the parish of Broadwater. The area consists of a number of Victorian and Edwardian homes including some lovely sea front properties. A little way North of the sea front is Worthing Hospital which is generally surrounded by better value property. As of the last census date there were 4,300 residential properties in the area of which 55% were houses and 45% flats. Other notable details include:

• 62% of residents in the area own their own homes.
• Approximately 38% of residents live in rented property.
• 27% of the population cycle or walk to work.
• 87% of the population live within 200 meters of a bus stop or railway station.
• 70% of properties let in the last 12 months were flats.
• 40% of tenants are between 30-39 years old.
• The most predominant industry of employment is Public admin, education & health which comprises 33.8% of the working age population. 
• Almost 90% of the properties are served with ultra fast broadband (over 300 mbps) compared with regional average of 53%. 

Transport

The area has a well connected transport infrastructure with residents having access to Worthing and East Worthing stations which both have direct trains to Brighton, London, Gatwick Airport, Portsmouth and Chichester. Approximately 87%+ of housing is within 200 walking meters of either a bus stop or railway station.

Did you know?

• Significant erosion of the coastline took place over the course of the 19th century, with at least 70 yards of land lost. The earlier coast road to Lancing was 60 yd (55 m)-100 yards to the south of the present day coast road on Brighton Road.
• Home to Bowls England, East Worthing is, with Johannesburg, one of only two locations in the world to have hosted the men's World Bowls Championships twice. The events were held in 1972 and 1992, both at Beach House Park, which is sometimes known as the spiritual home of bowls, and is also the venue for the annual National Championships each August.
• Worthing Hospital moved to it's current site in Lyndhurst Road in 1882. Today it is managed by Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and was rated as 'Outstanding' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in 2016.
